raaargh!!!: the game of giant atomic monsters
3D Production Lead, Technical Artist, Level Designer
RAAARGH!!! was pitched as a mobile game that combines the arcade classic Rampage with pet simulators. Developed simultaneously for the iOS platform and PCs, in RAAARGH!!! players can issue commands to their giant monster, but the monster has a mind of its own and may require electric shocks to force its obedience. I was brought onto this student project initially as a 3D modeler, however I was quickly shifted to level designer out of necessity. Due to my dedication on the project and natural leadership abilities, I was promoted to 3D production lead and technical artist. My responsibilities included constructing the virtual cityscape with assets provided by my team, implementing the animation and sound assets, creating scripted events in the cityscape, making the in-engine cutscene sequences, ensuring the final product adhered to the restrictions of mobile platforms, and working closely with the creative director, the artists, and the programmers to ensure work was progressing smoothly. A playable project demo was completed within one semester, and the game successfully ran on both PCs and the iPad.
This trailer shows the game in action. The demo was fully playable in Unreal Development Kit (UDK).
I also worked on models and textures for the demo to ensure the project was completed in one semester, including this 1960s inspired gas station. The low resolution of the models and textures was to ensure the game would run without slowdown on mobile platforms. The player does not typically get to see such a closeup view of the buildings.
